You’re excited to hit the roads again this summer. Your motorcycle has been safely tucked away during the winter months, and the approaching summer has led you to take it out of storage.

You’ve even bought yourself new safety gear, including leathers, gloves and a helmet. All safety equipment is important, but your helmet is the most crucial aspect. A good motorcycle helmet can protect you from fatal injuries should a collision occur.

Try before you buy

Although you have your precise head measurements and knowledge of your last helmet’s size, you should still try a helmet on in-store before committing. Make sure it’s not too heavy, and that the straps are adjustable and made of material that isn’t going to dig into your skin.

Testing at home

Did you fail to try the helmet on in-store? Not to worry, you can still carry out some checks at home. While this may sound unusual, you can put the helmet on at home before you even set off. Ideally, you want to wear the helmet for at least 30 minutes. If you’re embarrassed about doing this in front of people, why not head down to the garage for a while and give the bike a clean before you set off?

Wearing your new helmet for a while before heading out can allow you to perform the checks that you could’ve done in the store before buying. If everything feels good, then you can be on your way. If you notice any defects, then you can ring up the store and ask about their returns policy.

An ill-fitting helmet is an unsafe helmet, so make sure you get one that works for you. Sadly, some collisions are simply unavoidable, no matter how careful you are.
