Leg injuries in a crash may seriously impact your life

In automobile accidents, it’s possible to severely injure your legs. These injuries are particularly common in front-end collisions and side collisions where the driver is almost directly impacted.

Crushing injuries from the front end pushing in or damage from debris could both lead to serious, and potentially life-threatening, injuries to the legs. If the vehicle has hot pieces of machinery in the front end, then it’s possible that the driver could be burned as well.

Leg injuries have the potential to be serious and to cause lasting consequences. They could significantly impact your ability to get around and could even result in surgical amputation if an injury is bad enough. After a crash, it’s in your best interests to seek medical care as soon as possible. A laceration could cause infection, broken bones could need to be set, or there could be any number of other issues to address.

What are some of the common leg injuries caused by car crashes?

Some of the common injuries to the legs may include:

  • Injuries to the thigh bone, such as a broken thighbone
  • A broken or bruised shinbone
  • A broken calf bone

Some of the other problems that may arise include:

  • A torn meniscus, which is when the knee is over-rotated
  • An ACL injury, which occurs when the anterior cruciate ligament is damaged in a collision
  • Deep lacerations that cause a significant loss of blood. These injuries may need surgical debridement to clean them out and further surgery to repair the damage.
  • Amputations due to sharp objects or acute crushing motions

All of these injuries are significant and should be taken seriously following a crash. If you are in a collision and realize that you or one of your passengers has a leg or knee injury, make sure you call 911 and seek medical attention.

No injury is too small for you to seek medical help

Even a minor injury has the potential to worsen and cause further complications, so it’s smart to go seek the help of a medical professional so that you can get the care you need as soon as possible.
